In the European Parliament election, Gozo gave the Labour Party a relative majority in the 13th district and reversed the result of last year's general election.

A district analysis of the votes cast in Saturday's election indicates gains ranging between five and six percentage points across all districts for Labour.

On the other hand, the Nationalist Party saw its share of the vote drop between eight and nine percentage points across the board, one year after winning a general election by the skin of its teeth.

In Gozo, traditionally a Nationalist stronghold, Labour took 48.1 per cent of the vote while the PN managed 47.5 per cent. The PN lost almost eight percentage points over its showing in the general election, although the lost votes did not pass completely on to Labour, which gained more than five percentage points over the 2008 election.

Labour also made important gains in the eighth and 12th districts bringing down the difference between both major parties to a mere percentage point.

In these two PN-leaning districts, the governing party only managed relative majorities.

The second district, former Labour premier Dom Mintoff's birthplace, delivered the biggest victory for the party confirming its traditional position as a bastion of support. There Labour achieved 72 per cent of votes cast against the PN's 24 per cent.

Labour's worst showing, even if it still registered an increase of five percentage points, was in the 10th district where it obtained 39 per cent of the votes cast.

Despite registering a drop of more than eight percentage points, the 10th district was also the PN's best result at 55 per cent.

Compared to the last general election, Alternattiva Demokratika saw marginal improvements across all districts and confirmed its stronger voting base in the northern districts where it obtained results above three per cent.

Norman Lowell's far-right Imperium Europa doubled its voting share from five years ago registering results above one per cent across all districts. In the 11th district it even surpassed the two per cent mark.

On the other hand, the right-wing party Azzjoni Nazzjonali saw negligible improvements in most districts compared to the general election result.

The newly-formed Libertas made absolutely no inroads among the electorate with its sole candidate gaining 298 votes nationwide.
