The Nationalist Party said this evening that it had noted comments by the Auditor-General in a report on the Good Causes Fund published yesterday that; "NAO considers the funding of most of the aforementioned initiatives as a valid means of supporting deserving causes that are of benefit to many and which tie in with the broader national objectives.”

This conclusion, it said, went against government comments on the outcome of the report.

Reacting to the report's conclusion that the Good Causes Fund was over-committed, the PN said the system of commitment letters was introduced on the recommendation of the Auditor-General himself when he said funds should not be handed over before works were completed.

The PN also noted that even when all commitments were settled, the fund was expected to end up with a balance of approximately €129,000, which could then be used to pay any commitments made after March 2013.
