The Nationalist Party said today that the fact that the government had persisted in trying to hold a parliamentary debate on the Enemalta-Shanghai Electric deal without publishing the relevant documents gave the impression that the contracts 'stank' and the governemnt had something to hide.

The opposition yesterday protested that the government wanted to go ahead with the debate - postponed from last month - despite not having published the documents. It demanded a ruling from the Speaker.

The government then said the debate would not be held.

The PN said the fact that the government wanted to hold the debate without publishing the documents contrasted with the administration's claims of wanting to be the most transparent in history.

It said it would continue to insist for publication of the documents before any debate.

LABOUR REACTION

In a reaction, the Labour Party said the PN tactics were an attempt by Simon Busuttil to put off speaking about this deal, which would put Enemalta back on a sound financial footing after raking up €700m in debts under the former government.

Dr Busuttil was blocking debate on the biggest foreign investment in Malta ever. He was being negative and destructive.
