The Nationalist Party said today that no one believed the Prime Minister when he claimed to have learnt of the Gaffarena scandal from the newspapers.

Accusing him of only continuing to deceive the people, in a statement the PN said that more than four weeks ago, it asked the Prime Minister how and when he learnt about the scandal.

Pressed by journalists today, Joseph Muscat said he learnt about the scandal from the newspapers.

The PN said that could not be true because even before The Sunday Times of Malta revealed the case on May 31, a government spokesman had already been defending the case.

Such deals, which cost millions, always ended up before the Cabinet. If former Parliamentary Secretary Michael Falzon had not taken the expropriation before the Cabinet, he would at least have spoken to the minister concerned - in this case the prime minister.

No wonder it had taken the Prime Minister four weeks to reply to a simply question, the PN said.
