The PN announced today that it has moved its Independence Day mass meeting to September 21, Independence Day proper.

The meeting was held on the eve of Independence Day for several years.

A programme of activities leading up to the anniversary was announced this morning by the party deputy leader for party affairs, Beppe Fenech Adami, and general secretary Chris Said.

Dr Fenech Adami gave no particular reason why the mass meeting was moved, but pointed out that Labour Party activities on March 31 in most years had been held on the actual day, despite official activities.

Dr Said said that in the run-up to Independence Day the party would be consulting its members on changes to the statue proposed by a party commission. The commission’s report is currently being studied by the Administrative Council. A general conference will be held next month.

Dr Said said the party had adopted the recommendations made by a commission which discussed the state of party finances. It was hoped that the party would be financially sustainable by the end of this month when income would break even. A backlog of salaries - most going back to two months - would be paid out by the end of this month and the party's financial companies would achieve sustainability.

The party has embarked on a cost cutting exercise and has dismissed part-timers.

The theme of the Independence activities will be Il Quddiem – Forward, a theme chosen on the basis of the fact that the party was always forward looking, as manifested by the attainment of independence and EU membership, Dr Fenech Adami said.

A varied programme of activities, including sports, culture and politics, kicks off on September 18. As in the past, the focus of the activities will be on the Granaries in Floriana.
