The Nationalist Party said today that a report by the Auditor-General issued yesterday showed how Economic Affairs Minister Chris Cardona put himself above the law when he re-ranked firms which had bid for a contract to provide legal services for the granting of concessions for the operation of casinos.

The re-ranking was made after an Evaluation Committee submitted its rankings.

In a statement issued by deputy leader Mario de Marco and MP Kristy Debono, the PN said the auditor’s report confirmed political interference and a lack of transparency by Dr Cardona. His actions contrasted sharply with PL promises of transparency and accountability.

The audfitor’s comments about shortcomings in the administrative process were very serious and showed how wrong the government had been to remove experienced officers from their posts.

The way how the government was interfering in legal and judicial processes – also evidenced in the smart meters case – was a disgrace and would lead to the people losing confidence in the national institutions, the PN said.
