I could not believe what I heard on the news bulletin on January 18: a seasoned politician such as Jason Azzopardi hinting that Adrian Delia is in league with the Labour government “to help each other”.

Is it possible that Azzopardi’s political desperation has reached such a level as to make him make such an atrocious allegation he certainly knows is a pure invention, solely aimed at undermining his own party leader? Does he also foolishly believe he can somehow dent the Labour government’s credibility and popularity?

In reply, Delia suggested to Azzopardi to examine his own conscience and decide whether his position in the party is still tenable. It was about time that Delia did not continue running scared of those he knows very well are working day and night to oust him from his position as leader of the Opposition.

Delia also knows that the ‘leader’ of the campaign against him is none other than Simon Busuttil. Delia has already made a cardinal mistake when he turned tail after telling Busuttil to suspend himself from the Nationalist parliamentary group after the publication of the salient points of Magistrate Aaron Bugeja’s Egrant inquiry report.

I do believe those Nationalist MPs known to be involved in this anti-Delia campaign will be punished by PN voters if they are allowed to contest the election. They seem unaware that their actions are causing more harm to their own political interest than Delia’s because they are giving him a very valid argument if the PN suffers a bigger defeat on May 25. Delia will, justifiably, hold them responsible for that defeat.
