The Nationalist Party had written off claims that it only has enough money to stretch it to the end of January as "fiction".

Malta Today this morning reported that the PN was teetering close to financial ruin, with financial estimates calculating that the party would be insolvent by the third week of the new year.

Those estimates, the paper reported, did not take into account the salary owed to new media.link CEO Pierre Portelli or those of two party directors yet to be appointed.

In a statement issued this afternoon, the PN denied the claims and implied that Malta Today was a government shill. The Labour party, the PN said, was "using its media" to destabilise the PN and its ongoing restructuring process.

"The PN's new administration will honour restructuring plans which began some years ago and which seek to exploit a restricted number of properties for commercial use," the party said.

Joseph Muscat, the party said, should disclose how thousands of euros worth of advertising were being distributed "between his favourite media, which serves him loyally, and truly independent media".

Malta Today had also claimed that the party was planning to put its Naxxar and Żejtun clubs on the market. The PN statement denied that it was selling its Naxxar club, but made no mention of Żejtun. Last Sunday, Kulħadd claimed that the PN would be selling its Għaxaq and Fleur-de-Lys clubs.

In its statement, the PN said that the allegations were diversionary tactics adopted by the Labour party to "cover up the collapse of rule of law in our country" and work towards creating a one-party state.

The PN would be holding its annual fundraising marathon on December 10, the party said.

'You're already unstable' - PL

Reacting, the Labour Party said that there was no need for it to try and destabilise the PN, because the Opposition party was already unstable as things were.

It slammed the PN for attacking an independent media house over an article "which from the PN's own statement appears to contain correct details."
