The tenants of a Nationalist Party club investigated for irregular energy consumption have reached a repayment agreement, party sources said yesterday.

Inquiries revealed that the irregular consumption was not the result of illegal tampering, the sources added.

The PN asked the State energy provider to investigate possible electricity theft at one of its party clubs earlier this month.

In a letter sent to Enemalta chairman Frederick Azzopardi, PN general secretary Rosette Thake urged the corporation to investigate the energy consumption at its Marsaxlokk club following “a confidential tip-off”.

The club, in Żejtun Street, was found to have benefited from cheaper utility bills, but the sources said it did not appear that its meter had been tampered with.

Last year, several Enemalta employees, homeowners and businesses were investigated over a meter-fixing racket which saw people pay thousands of euros to have their meters rigged.

The sources said the meter appeared simply to not have been working properly.

Enemalta declined to comment on questions from this newspaper yesterday.

Ms Thake said only that the PN had not interfered with the Enemalta inquiry and had acted appropriately throughout. She said when the PN had first received information about irregular consumption at the Marsaxlokk club, it was immediately passed on to the authorities.

In her letter, Ms Thake called on Mr Azzopardi to take all steps to investigate the allegations and “take all measures available at law” if the allegations were proven to be accurate.

While the ground floor of the building is used as a restaurant named Ristorante Dell’ Arte, the upper floor is used by the PN. The electricity meter covered the whole building and was registered under the name ‘PN Club Marsaxlokk’.
