The Democratic Party has called for changes to the electoral process to ensure that all parties are represented in parliament in proportion to the votes they get at a national level, even if they fail to achieve a district quota.

The PD observed that parliament is debating amendments to the General Elections Act aimed to simplify and to harmonise administrative processes.

This, it said, was a golden opportunity to rectify fundamental flaws in the electoral process which, by design, deprive the electorate of a proper democratic transition based on the voting rights of the people.

It insisted that the total number of deputies elected should proportionally match the total votes cast to all grouped lists of candidates on a national level, even those who did not manage to elect a deputy in a constituency.

In addition coalitions should be recognised on the ballot paper and hence in the determination of proportional representation.
