The police should investigate why the financial set-up of Energy Minister Konrad Mizzi had not been declared in his income tax returns, the shadow minister for home affairs, Beppe Fenech Adami said this afternoon.

It was revealed a few days ago that Dr Mizzi has a trust in New Zealand and a company in Panama.

Addressing a news conference, Dr Fenech Adami also raised questions on the chief of staff at the Office of the Prime Minister, Keith Schembri. He asked for the name of his Panamanian company, the time when it was set up, where it was registered, whether it had done any trading and how much the consultant advising Mr Schembri been been paid.

Dr Fenech Adami said that Mr Schembri often boasted of having set up a multi-million euro business. This, he said, should have excluded him from taking a position such as the PM’s chief of staff.

Mr Schembri, Dr Fenech Adami said, should explain why he left his business to work at Castille.

“I suppose it must be for his great love of the country,” Dr Fenech Adami said sarcastically.

He said that the consequence of having someone like Mr Schembri in such a position was the mess there was today.

These people, he said, wanted the people to believe that they set up these companies without the intention of hiding assets there.

Asked if he would guarantee that PN ministers would not do something similar if elected, Dr Fenech Aaami said “this goes without saying”.

He was also asked to react to the statement of the Panamanian Foreign Affairs Ministry yesterday rejecting claims that the country was a tax haven.

Dr Fenech Adami replied that even the North Korean Foreign Minister probably sent out statements that North Korea was the most democratic country in the world.
