The Nationalist Party this afternoon welcomed the government's decision to lower the price of fuel but said it will keep insisting that prices should go down much further.

Addressing a press conferencee, energy shadow minister Marthese Portelli said that although the government was forced to bow to pressure, the cut in price was minimal and should go down further.

The average price of fuel in the EU was still much lower than Malta’s new price.

"The price that Maltese consumers pay should reflect the EU average which is still much lower," Dr Portelli said.

Reacting to comments by Energy Minister Konrad Mizzi that the government will be further cutting prices, Dr Portelli said that this was an admission that the government was not passing all the savings it was making to the consumer.

She said that this showed that the government was still deceiving the people while not giving any information on the mistakes it had made in its hedging agreements.

Dr Portelli said the PN was also continuing to insist that the issue should be debated in parliament.
