Opposition spokesman Ryan Callus has accused the Prime Minister of “covering up for the corruption” that took place at the property department.

Mr Callus said the Prime Minister’s order to the police to secure the files at the property department last week came nine months late.

“The government dragged its feet and whoever wanted to hide his tracks had ample time to do so,” he said.

The Nationalist Party kept up the pressure on the government in the wake of the Auditor General’s findings in the Gaffarena scandal that prompted the resignation of former parliamentary secretary Michael Falzon.

Mr Callus said the National Audit Office report was replete with examples of documents and minutes that were tempered with, insisting this was a clear indication of corruption.

Addressing a press conference outside the Government Property Department in Valletta, Mr Callus said Prime Minister Joseph Muscat would have won the best actor award for sending the police nine months after the first allegations on the Gaffarena affair surfaced in the media.

Mr Callus said the PN trusted the Attorney General but still believed the court case filed by the Prime Minister to recoup the Gaffarena millions and land was inconceivable.
