Private sector investment at the Waterfront since the inauguration of the project has now reached €35 million.

This not only beneficial to tourists but also to the Maltese, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said this morning.

Speaking during a visit to the Waterfront, accompanied by Tourism Parliamentary Secretary Mario de Marco, Dr Gonzi said the investment included the restoration of the area, through which its heritage re-emerged. Blended with modern features, this now offers a product and service to all visitors.

The Prime Minister welcomed the fact that the cruise liner industry grew again this year so much so that the number of cruise passengers had doubled.

He described the port as a jewel but pointed out there were still challenges ahead and everyone involved had to continue working hard to ensure continuous success.

Dr Gonzi and Dr de Marco were shown around the shops and tourist facilities by Viset management personnel.

They boarded the two cruise liners present – the Aidabella and the MSC Splendida, where they were welcomed by the ships’ officers and chatted with some of the tourists on board.
