The Prime Minister is to meet a delegation of the Malta Union of Teachers of Tuesday, MUT president John Bencini said this morning.

The union requested the meeting last week to discuss a number of issues, notably the situation at the Institute for Tourism Studies and teachers’ grades.

The union has complained that the Ministry of Education vetoed a deal on a new collective agreement reached with the ITS management at a conciliation meeting. The ministry denied that agreement was reached on all points. It said the outstanding issue was a union request to reduce the contact hours of academic staff by two hours to 22, something with which the ministry disagreed.

Mr Bencini said the union would call a rally for teachers if the outcome of the meeting with the Prime Minister is not positive.
