The Prime Minister said yesterday that he believes the term of local councils should be extended beyond the present three years.

He was addressing some 450 councillors at Castille yesterday to mark 15 years since the setting up of local councils.

He said local councils should be catalysts for sustainable development and therefore their term should be extended to allow them to implement their projects.

Dr Gonzi's statement follows a similar suggestion by the Labour party as part of the local councils reform launched by the government earlier this year.

The work carried out by local councils was instrumental to achieving the government's vision of 2015, he said.

During yesterday's ceremony, each local council was given a commemorative silver coin. Special coins were also given to the Director of Local Government Natalino Attard and the President of the Local Councils' Association, Michael Cohen, while Parliamentary Secretary Chris Said presented another coin to the Prime Minister.
