Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and Opposition leader Joseph Muscat this afternoon separately visited the Puttinu Cares football and volleyball marathon at the Marsa sports ground.

The 60-hour marathon, in which hundreds of enthusiastic people are taking part, kicked off yesterday morning. €146,000 had been raised by 4.45 p.m. today.

Gozo bishop Mario Grech celebrated Mass at the grounds this afternoon.

The marathon includes an auction of shirts of a large number of top international and Maltese players.

The Puttinu Foundation is building apartments in Sutton, London, to help parents whose children need specialised cancer treatment in the UK. The total cost involved is €3 million. €700, were raised in last year's marathon.
