Electrical Supplies and Services (ESS) had their new premises inaugurated this afternoon by Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi.

Managing director Duncan Agius said that he invested €2.5 million in his dream project due to the country’s economic growth and the various opportunities opened since Malta’s EU membership.

From a humble beginning in a small garage at Hamrun 12 years ago, his company grew to become one of the main electrical suppliers on the island, employing 30 people, Mr Agius said.

He said that ESS had also managed to acquire €100,000 in EU funds to invest in renewable energy.

Dr Gonzi described ESS as a tangible example of the country’s strong economy where businessman found the right environment to continue to grow and invest.

He said that through the various schemes introduced in the past legislature by Malta Enterprise, hundreds of SMEs benefitted from direct help.

Dr Gonzi said that through the micro credit scheme, 430 SMEs invested more than €65million while other businesses invested €36 million through micro finance and were given incentives amounting to €12 million.

The government will soon announce new proposals for the sector, Dr Gonzi said.
