Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi is in Brussels for meetings of EU heads of government and leaders of the European People’s Party (EPP).

The EU summit will be held tomorrow at the end of the Spanish Presidency.Its focus will be the approval of a new EU economic strategy to be implemented by member states by the end of the decade.

The “EU 2020" strategy, as it is called, proposes headline targets in various fields, such as employment, research and development, education and poverty reduction. In this context, heads of state and government will also assess work on the bottlenecks that constrain growth.

The one-day meeting chaired by Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Council, will also discuss the forthcoming G 20 summit, economic governance and post-Copenhagen climate strategy.

Dr Gonzi is expected back in Malta tomorrow evening.
