The Prime Minister in a statement this afternoon said he would safeguard the right of MPs to vote Yes or No to divorce in Parliament, while insisting that this was a time for reconciliation.

He, however, did not say which way he will vote.

In his statement, Dr Gonzi observed that in the past few days, some people had expressed concern that the majority Yes vote in the referendum would not be reflected in a majority Yes in Parliament.

He pointed out that as soon as the referendum result became known he had declared that the outcome would be respected, and Parliament, therefore, had a duty to approve the Divorce Bill.

As leader of the Nationalist Party, it was also his duty to ensure that the decision expressed by the people was respected.

Dr Gonzi said his consultations showed that a majority for approval of the Bill in Parliament already existed.

"The Nationalist MPs who will vote 'Yes' have every right to do so, indeed, it is their duty to vote Yes once they have so decided in their conscience," Dr Gonzi said.

"I will defend the right of every MP to reach his own decision in the circumstance,s to safeguard the common good, whether the vote is for a Yes, a No or an abstention" Dr Gonzi said.

He added that the Nationalist group in Parliament would, in loyalty to the referendum result, contribute so that Malta was given the best law possible.

That would ensure that the law was approved without increased controversy and division.

This, Dr Gonzi said, was a time for reconciliation between the various different views, and the country needed to focus its energies so that, in line with what the people wanted, measures were taken to ensure that the number of couples who felt they needed to divorce would be as small as possible.

Parliamentary secretary Mario de Marco and Nationalist MPs David Agius, Karl Gouder, Jesmond Mugliett, Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando, Michael Gonzi and Franco Debono have said they will vote Yes.

Robert Arrigo, Joe Falzon, and Jean Pierre Farrugia are also expected to vote Yes.

Minister Austin Gatt and MP Beppe Fenech Adami have declared they will vote No. Minister Giovanna Debono and MP Edwin Vassallo are also expected to vote No.
