Prime Minister Joseph Muscat expressed his desire to forge closer ties with the university and said both sides will hold regular meetings in future.

Dr Muscat made this statement in the presence University Rector Juanito Camilleri and the college of deans at the Aula Magna of the Old University in Valletta.

Journalists were only allowed to report the first few minutes of the meeting.

Dr Muscat justified the presence of the deputy Prime Minister, the Finance Minister, the Education Minister and other senior Government officials, saying he wanted to have the key decision makers present for such an important event.

University Rector Juanito Camilleri said that Malta must continually strive to be a step ahead but at the same time has to plan according to country’s needs and financial constraints.
