The latest craze under the guise of eliminating streaming is just another attempt to bring all students down to the lowest possible level. When the motivated are mixed with those who do not care, the result will be a complete ruin. The idea to bring everybody down to the lowest level is a maxim of Communism. In the present age we know that Communism does not work and it will similarly fail if imposed on education.

The problem is not with streaming but with motivation. Why are certain children motivated more than others?

Perhaps competitive examinations as such can put a strain on students, but life has always been a rat race. It is not examinations that are wrong. As in the case of the Sixth Form and the University, in secondary education there should never be a numerus clausus. The exams should assess if each student would benefit by moving into a grammar school or by taking a different route. Any child should be given a fair chance, even if he/she suffers from an inferiority complex. The junior lyceums should have enough space and facilities to accept all those truly capable of continuing with their studies.

It is unfair that those who can afford it will send their sons and daughters into private schools, even if at great financial sacrifice. What is needed is a change in mentality.

One-upmanship will always exist but we must never rein in the brighter students for such a feeble excuse. The mentality that everyone is born equal has no basis in real life. Even Jesus, in one of His parables, stated that the Master had given his three servants five, three and one talent respectively. He did not give them three talents each as certain "modern" persons are trying to indicate. Are we now saying that the teaching of Jesus is wrong?
