A call for tenders to restore the bastions on the front of the Citadel, Gozo's old capital, has been issued now that the master plan for the mediaeval fortification has been completed.

The works are expected to cost about €7 million and take three years to complete, Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono said as she unveiled the €264,000 master plan that will serve as a guideline for the Citadel's restoration.

The plan, which was drawn up by Italian firm Politecnica Ingegneria ed Architettura after it was awarded the contract in February 2009, involved input from various archaeological, engineering and architectural experts.

Two calls for expressions of interest have also been made - the first is for surveys to establish the condition of the bastions and the second for a geo-technical consultancy, which will establish the state of the fragile rock foundations.

Mrs Debono inaugurated an exhibition at the Citadel Centre for Culture and the Arts, which will remain open until the end of July showing the recommendations made in the plan.
