I read with interest the article about the plans for Dock No. 1 (November 20). I fully agree that the area needs dire attention and the development and embellishment of the area will generate economic activity.
However, I cannot understand why in every project glass and steel structures have to be so prominent. Having a close look at the "after" picture, it is very obvious that the structure just below the Senglea Gate jars quite a lot. The landscape should be left as it is. The arches and the street above are part of the Senglea landscape. Also they blend in quite well with the historical fortifications of Senglea. If the developers want to make use of buildings I am sure that the existing old workshops are more than enough. Haven't we learnt anything from the monstrous building adjacent to Fort St Angelo?
Another point of observation: Well done for the computer-generated photos, but the computers, or rather the human designer, has no sense of safety for young cyclists. It needs just a slight moment of distraction for that young girl shown in another of the pictures to fall into the water.
Nowadays, computer-generated designs can make a project look like heaven on earth but reality will show otherwise.
