The Planning Authority has been urged by environment NGO not to grant a permit for a 'residence' overlooking Wied il-Kbir, Swieqi.

Nature Trust Malta, Din l-Art Helwa, Front Harsien ODZ, Flimkien ghall-Ambjent Ahjar (FAA) and the Ramblers Association said the proposed development would take place on the side of the valley in an area which is outside the development zone.

"This is an application for an extension to a small rural structure (conveniently referred to as a residence) to convert it into a residence complete with swimming pool, reservoir and cesspit. The grounds cover an area of 5,000 metres squares and is on a valley side. Granting this permit could open the gates to many other developments and spell the ruination of yet another of Malta’s valleys," the NGOs said.

They pointed out that a third of the population of Malta lives in the North Harbour District. "The common good should outweigh the speculative gain of an individual in an ODZ," they insisted.

Wied il-Kbir and the adjoining Wied Għomor are scheduled as Areas of Ecological Importance and Sites of Scientific Importance.
