Officials from the Planning Authority moved in to remove tons of material from an illegal scrapyard in Siggiewi today after the owner ignored warnings to close down the place.

The site was the subject of three previous Planning Authority operations, two in 2006 and another one in late 2015.

Given the size of the site, the Authority had come to an agreement whereby the owner was to remove the remaining illegal scrap in phases, over a period of time.

But the Authority said the owner had broken the agreement and actually put in more material.

The material removed from the site, which covers an area of over 3,700m2, consisted mainly of abandoned vehicles.

During today's operation, members of the Police Administrative Law Enforcement Section had to intervene several times to allow the work to continue.
