A draft management plan for a nature park at Zonqor Point, launched for public consultation this morning, is proposing transforming a 30,000 square metre area currently within the development boundaries to an outside development zone.

The 30,000 form part of a 44,000 square metre area which the draft is proposing adding to the 929,000 square metre area earmarked for the park.

Following the announcement that the new university would be split over a site alongside Dock 1 in Cospicua and a reduced site at Zonqor, Marsacala last August, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat had declared that the planned Nature Park would still be built in Zonqor, and its footprint would be enlarged to what was planned in 2001.

Environment Minister Leo Brincat this morning described the plan as this government’s biggest environmental project.

The area, he said, was in a state of abandonment and the government would see what needed to be done to regenerate it.

The brief can be read in the pdf link below.

Submissions are be sent to consultations.msdec@gov.mt by March 30.
