The Labour Party this afternoon slammed the increases in LPG, petrol and diesel, announced by Enemalta, saying they confirmed that the government was isolated from the economic reality which the people and the country were living.

"The manner in which the government has raised prices is nothing less than economic and social irresponsibility," the party said.

The party pointed out that ever since the Budget, it had been calling on the government to be clear about the price of gas (LPG), but repeated questioning was ignored. The Opposition had also insisted that the government should have negotiated a pricing policy on LPG before the Enemalta gas division was privatised.

The PL said that in its statement, Enemalta had not explained why fuel prices were rising when the international price of oil was stable.

"Lawrence Gonzi's insensitivity and lack of economic realism is harming the people's quality of life. These increases, and the power and electricity bills, will also endanger the jobs of hundreds of Maltese and Gozitan workers," the PL said.
