The Labour Party said today that information issued by the government late yesterday about Richard Cachia Caruana's remuneration showed that parliament had been given incomplete information for years.

The party said that a remuneration of some €150,000 plus about €170,000 in perks (according to some reports) showed that Mr Cachia Caruana was no ordinary civil servant, as he was portrayed. Nor was he paid as such.

The PL said it had been revealed for the first time that Mr Cachia Caruana was paid for more than one post.

It said that had the government had nothing to hide, the information on Mr Cachia Caruana's remuneration would have been issued promptly and clearly.

And yet, the PL said, it had still not been revealed how much Mr Cachia Caruana cost the state 'it total' including rents, housekeeping, travel and driver.

Labour MP Leo Brincat said he would continue to ask the government to publish its documents on total spending on Mr Cachia Caruana since 2007, contracts with Mr Cachia Caruana, a confirmation or denial about whether Mr Cachia Caruana had been paid arrears, and how much these amounted to.

Mr Brincat also asked if Mr Cachia Caruana, as a member of the Cabinet, was given the pay raise given to the ministers.
