The Labour parliamentary group confirmed this morning that it will nominate Anglu Farrugia to serve as Speaker.

Dr Farrugia, who dramatically resigned as party deputy leader last December, was proposed by Prime Minister Joseph Muscat.

He also proposed that the Opposition would be invited to nominate the Deputy Speaker - as had been the practice for the past few years. The Labour Parliamentary Group agreed.

The Speaker is due to be appointed when the new session of Parliament starts on Saturday morning.

Dr Farrugia did not contest the last general election.
