The Labour Party said this afternoon that while the government was trying to take the credit for the admission of the Forum trade union group in the MCESD, 15 months ago it voted against an opposition motion in parliament calling for the same thing.
At the time, the government had said that an extension of MCESD membership should come about through consensus within the council.
The PL said it had disagreed with this argument and had called for amendments to the law. Now it was being proved right.
The GWU in a separate statement welcomed the Forum's admittance to the council but also said should have happened a long time ago.
The union noted that MCESD membership was also being opened to the Gozo Business Chamber and Civil Society. It said it had proposed this extension months ago, and it hoped that the government was acting out of conviction, not electoral convenience.
