Labour deputy leader Toni Abela said this afternoon that Giovanna Debono should resign her parliamentary seat in view of the allegations made against her.

He said Opposition leader Simon Busuttil should treat former minister Giovanna Debono the way he did former ministers Michael Falzon and Ninu Zammit.

The two former ministers were suspended from the PN after their name surfaced among Swiss account holders. They are no longer MPs.

Speaking at a press conference on the PL’s two years in government, Dr Abela said that in view of police investigations into allegations that Ms Debono’s husband used public funds to carry out free construction works for her constituents, the former minister should no longer remain an MP.

“The Manuel Mallia case resulted in his dismissal (from the Cabinet),” Dr Abela said, referring to the former home affairs minister and the shooting incident involving his driver.

“Ninu and Michael were dispensable for Dr Busuttil. He should act as the Prime Minister acted – what is he waiting for?”

He also noted that no action had been taken again shadow minister Toni Bezzina following allegations that he made civil servants sign a false declaration, Dr Abela added.

The PL deputy leader said the government was taking all the necessary steps to address the failings highlighted in Auditor General’s report regarding Café Premier.
