Updated - Two young people who were in a group that held protest picnics on roundabouts yesterday are being interrogated by the police this morning.

The picnics were organised by Front Ħarsien ODZ to draw the public’s attention to the problem of diminishing undeveloped land in Malta.

Two of the participants were summoned to Ħamrun police station this morning.

Simone Cutajar, one of the activists who was questioned, told Times of Malta the police had asked them for a statement about their intentions in organising the picnic, but did not indicate what laws may have been broken.

“I made it clear that it was just a peaceful gathering of concerned citizens who wished to pass on a message,” she said.

Ms Cutajar said she specifically asked whether it was illegal to stand on a public roundabout, and was told that in itself this did not constitute an offence.

Activists held picnics on roundabouts next to a slogan reading 'Without nature, look where we’ve ended up'.

"Malta is, by far, the country with most built-up areas in the EU – 33% compared to the EU average of 5% (Eurostat 2012). Yet, ODZ land continues to face the constant threat of development through unsustainable projects such as that of Sadeen’s institute," the Front said.
