The rough seas at Golden Bay on Saturday did not deter 33 triathletes from taking to the water at 7.30 a.m. for the traditional Easter Sprint - 750m swim, 20km cycle and 5km run - organised by the Malta Triathlon Association (MTA).

The race, sponsored by Kristal Water and Powerade, saw the participation of a group of British triathletes, all led by Steve Trew, member of the British triathlon squad.

2002 winner Phil Anthony repeated his feat this time around in 58:02, two minutes and 20 seconds ahead of Malta champion Dermot Galea.

Third overall was the surprise of the day, Keith Galea. At the age of 15 and studying hard for his exams, Galea is fulfilling the promise he showed at the end of the last season.

The ladies race was won by Joanna Hinde. She is ranked in the top 10 in the UK. Her time of 61:58 is one of the best for the Easter Sprint.

Second was Maria Mifsud Bonnici, 65:21, and third Caroline Jones, 69:09.

Meanwhile, 10 local triathletes, including one woman, are gearing up for next Saturday's Gozo-Malta Triathlon, one of the toughest races in the MTA calendar.

The race includes a 12km run from San Lawrenz to Hondoq ir-Rummien followed by a five-kilometre swim across the channel to Cirkewwa. Triathletes then cycle 38kms to Birzebbuga.
