San Anton School, L-Imselliet, recently organised a Pets Day for its junior classes on the feast of St Anthony the Abbot, patron saint of domestic animals.

Pupils excitedly brought their pets to school and turned the junior sector common area into a menagerie of dogs, cats, tortoises, turtles, birds, goldfish, rabbits, hamsters, cats and dogs.

Spiritual director Fr Ġorġ Dalli told the story of St Anthony the Abbot and blessed the animals at the event, while veterinarian Quentin Lawson talked about pet care and answered children's questions. The traditional ħobza ta' Sant'Antnin was later distributed to each child, symbolising the bread that a raven is reputed to have brought to St Anthony while he was living in solitude.

Eucanuba sponsored the activity, offering books, pet food and animal calendars to each class, and prizes for a follow-up animal drawing competition.
