Opposition leader Simon Busuttil this evening presented in Parliament a petition by more than a thousand Maltese citizens living in Australia against the government’s controversial cash-for-citizenship scheme.

He said the petition was gathered on the initiative of a new committee called Maltese Pride.

It calls on the Maltese government to reconsider the citizenship scheme, reach consensus with the Opposition, introduce financial investment and residency requirements, take responsibility for due diligence and publish the names of applicants.

Dr Busuttil hoped the Government would listen to the signatories' wishes.
