A number of scheduled procedures at Mater Dei Hospital had to be postponed following problems at a site in Italy where a special chemical used for PET (Positron Emission Tomography) scans is produced.

Chief executive officer Ivan Falzon said in a statement Mater Dei Hospital brought the radioisotope tracer for PET scans from a facility in Italy on the same day this was produced as it could not be stored to be used on other days.

He said Italian engineers were working on the Italy site to return the situation to normal as soon as possible.
