More than thirty actors gathered on the shores of the Rimac River in Lima, Peru on yesterday to re-enact the baptism of Jesus Christ as Holy Week celebrations got underway in Latin America.

Actor Mario Valencia donned robes and sandals to portray Christ's baptism by John.

With a crowd looking on from a nearby bridge, other actors dipped Valencia into the muddy waters of the Rimac.

It's the 33rd straight year the bearded actor has played the role of Jesus for Holy Week celebrations.

Thousands of faithful filed past the San Francisco church in Lima Thursday as well.

The iconic centre of worship has a been a destination for pilgrims since the 17th century.
