Claudette Spiteri, M.Sc. (Tübingen), recently graduated as Doctor of Geochemistry from Utrecht University (The Netherlands).

Her thesis, entitled 'Reactive transport modelling of biogeochemical dynamics in subterranean estuaries: Implications for submarine groundwater discharge of nutrients', focused on the application of computer modelling tools to simulate the nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorus) dynamics in groundwater systems, in particular in coastal aquifers.

Together with her project partners from the University of Georgia, Athens, US, she has been actively involved in the development, testing and application of a novel reactive transport software code that couples groundwater flow in coastal areas and biogeochemical reactions.

Part of her research was done in collaboration with the Coastal Groundwater Geochemistry group at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, USA, where she spent some time as a guest scientist, funded by Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research.

During her Ph.D., she presented her research in international conferences in New York, Cagliari and Barcelona. She will be participating in the upcoming 'Groundwater Quality 2007' international conference in Fremantle, Australia.

Dr Spiteri obtained her B.Sc. (Hons) in Chemistry/Biology from the University of Malta in 2000.
