The Seismic Monitoring Unit of the Physics Department, University of Malta, said it had recorded and located the earthquake that produced the tremor felt yesterday at 6.14 a.m.. The estimated location, available very soon after the event and based on data from the single broadband seismic station at Wied Dalam, was 36.84 N ; 22.84 E, on the southern coast of the Greek mainland.

The magnitude was 6.2 and depth was around 73km. Data from Wied Dalam station is also transmitted in real time as part of the Virtual European Broadband Seismic Network (VEBSN) and contributes to the more detailed and accurate evaluation of Mediterranean earthquakes.

The unit said the public is invited to visit the Seismic Monitoring Unit’s website (www.phys.um.edu.mt/seismic) to fill in the online questionnaire and report their experience of the tremor. This will provide useful information for local research purposes.
