A call by the Animal Welfare Department for people to adopt puppies found abandoned in several parts of Malta has drawn an enthusiastic responsem with a record of 20 puppies being adopted in just two hours yesterday.

Welfare officer Janice Chetcuti said on Tuesday that four litters each with six to seven pups were found abandoned in several parts of Malta. Some had been left close to main roads.

This morning she said that only five puppies from these litters remained.

However, the department, which is based at Ghammieri, is also currently providing shelter for another 120 dogs, which are also looking for a home.

All puppies are weaned and able to eat on their own but are very vulnerable and in need of individual loving care.

The Animal Welfare Directorate is open to the public Mondays to Fridays between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., tel: 2590 4132, 2590 4113.
