Pensioner Liz Harris, 61, was part of a SwimTrek group which yesterday swam from Hondoq Bay in Gozo to Comino.

The Gozo to Comino swim took place on the final day of a week long training course, which was based in Xlendi.

Liz’s efforts raised about €500 for the Cardiac Care Unit at Gozo Hospital.

The group of 12, including swimmers from England, Scotland, Ireland and Switzerland, was taken by boat to Hondoq Bay and it was only at the last minute that the captain decided that conditions were safe enough to allow the swim to go ahead. The swimmers battled against high waves and force 5/6 winds during the swim, which took less than an hour.

At one point the captain thought the conditions were so rough that he should pull the swimmers from the water for their own safety.

However, as the swimmers were very close to Comino and about to enter calmer water, he allowed them to carry on.

After leaving the water Liz said that the swim had been very well organised and that the support and encouragement of the group had been invaluable.

Reader who would like to add to the sponsorship should send cheques payable to the Cardiac Care Unit to ‘Liz’s swim’ Dar ta Déjà Vue, 6 Klula Street, Santa Lucija, KCM 3061, Gozo.
