St Catherine’s High School, Pembroke, launched a sports academy whose initial pilot project is a football academy for Junior 5 and 6 pupils.

Besides improving football and other sports skills, the programme aims to improve pupils’ learning aptitudes and their focus in academic subjects.

Participation is optional and pupils joining the programme attend training and tutorial sessions every day during school hours and then continue with the rest of the timetable.

The school said the programme is the first of its kind in Malta at primary school level and is aimed to create dual learning pathways at this level which would then be extended throughout their educational journey at school.

Education Minister Evarist Bartolo, who was present for the launch, praised the initiative and stressed the need for such innovative learning pathways.

The football academy is the result of a collaboration between the school and Renzo Kerr Cumbo, for whom the project is part of his PhD study, and the participation of Talent 11.
