Division Three club Pembroke Athleta have appointed Charles Borg as their new coach.

Borg's top priority this season is to steer Pembroke to promotion to Division Two. In order to boost their promotion chances, Pembroke have signed no fewer than eight new players who, along with Borg, were introduced to the media last week.

At the news conference, held at the club premises, Pembroke also announced that EuroSport have extended their kit sponsorship for another season.

In his address, Borg spoke about the objectives of Pembroke's senior team this season but also stressed the importance of the club's youth set-up.

The new Pembroke coach promised to use his ties with the youth sector of Serie A club Juventus to create exchange programmes for young players and coaches.

Pembroke are also introducing a goalkeepers' school this season. The school, which is also open to youngsters who are not registered with Pembroke, will be run by a qualified goalkeepers' coach.

Another keynote event in Pembroke's 2009-10 calendar is the inauguration of the club's new artificial pitch, scheduled for next January.

Pembroke officials are hopeful that UEFA president Michel Platini, who is due to visit Malta in January for the European body's Executive Committee meeting, will preside over the pitch's inauguration ceremony.

Works on the installation of more artificial turf pitches and other amenities at the Pembroke grounds are expected to be completed within the next 12 months.

These new facilities are being financed by Pembroke Athleta, the Malta Tourism Authority and the Kunsill Malti għall-Isport as part of the master plan for the area.
