Several streets in central Valletta are to be paved and pedestrianised, Infrastructure Minister Austin Gatt and Resources Minister George Pullicino said today.

Work has already started on St Christopher Street and the target is to complete the repaving of the other streets by December, unless the project is hindered by any unexpected finds or developments.

The work, which is being done by the Valletta Rehabilitation Project, will stop in summer because of tourism and not to hinder businesses.

Mr Pullicino said that a study of the streets to be pedestrianised was made by people from VRP and the Restoration Unit.

They mapped the streets and looked for any original paving dating back to the time of the knights which has since been broken or covered over in concrete.

Any complete paving stones were removed, numbered and stored and they will be reused.

The new paving will be a replica of the paving of the past, when hardstone and lava were used, among other materials.

Infrastructure Minister Austin Gatt said existing bollards would be removed and new centrally-operated electronic bollards would be installed instead. There will also be a CCTV.

The project will see the paving of parts of St Christopher, Stait, Melita, il-Karrijiet, St John, South, Old Theatre, St Lucia, Merchants, Republic, St Frederick, Treasury, Archbishop and Felic streets.
