Partit Demokratiku has asked the Electoral Commission whether action will be taken against the Labour Party for failing to register itself as a political party within the timeframe.

The commission yesterday said the Labour Party is not registered as a political party in line with party financing legislation.

In a statement, PD said the Labour Party could have easily called for an extraordinary general meeting to amend its statute so as to conform with the law.

In the name of transparency, there should be mechanisms in place to regulate and make public any commercial transactions made with companies owned by the political parties or in which the political parties have a shareholding.

The party financing law should be amended so that no political party, no member of parliament and no candidate ends up too close to private business interests, PD said.

"Partit Demokratiku wonders if Labour is taking so long to amend their statute and submit their accounts because it's been busy collecting all the invoices of all the donations received last year.

"People are right to worry and question whether the government we've elected is working in the name of the voters who trusted it or in the name of the back room deals and a fait accompli."
