Paul Borg Olivier ends his term as general secretary of the Nationalist Party today, when the party executive is due to appoint Chris Said as his successor.

Dr Said was the only contender for the post, with Dr Borg Olivier having announced after the general election that he would not seek re-election.

"I end my term as Secretary General of the Party today after five years in office. It was a great experience working close to so many people including former Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and current Party Leader Simon Busuttil," Dr Borg Olivier said in a facebook post.

"I would like to thank all those who worked close to me in the real interest of the Party and the country. I wish all the best to Chris Said, my long-time friend and colleague who has all my support."

A commission set up by the PN to consider the reasons for the electoral defeat reported yesterday that Dr Borg Olivier in the past five years was burdened by the problems which arose as a consequence of the actions of Franco Debono and Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando.

It was also clear that the party's financial situation was far from rosy and he therefore spent a lot of time seeing how to manage the party in such a difficult time.

"These circumstances led the general secretary to dedicate much of his time to these problems, and, as a result, there was less attention to other important areas of the party including the organisational set-up, such as the section committees," the commission said.
