A man who suffered a massive heart attack while on holiday in the United States has demanded that All Care Insurance Limited honours its commitments and settles the medical bills.

In an official letter filed in court against the insurance firm, Neville Azzopardi, from St Paul's Bay, explained that he had suffered a heart attack while on holiday last December. His partner contacted the insurance firm which, in turn, asked her to contact its global response office in the UK to discuss the payment of medical fees as the American hospital was demanding insurance information before any treatment could be given.

However, no information was forthcoming, with the UK agency saying it had encountered lack of cooperation from AllCare in Malta on the matter.

Following a life-saving operation and after Mr Azzopardi was released from the American hospital, the global response office informed them that All Care Insurance Limited was not accepting liability or responsibility for the medical fees that ran into tens of thousands of dollars.

A meeting with the insurance firm after their arrival in Malta revealed that it had received information from Mr Azzopardi's family doctor that effectively nullified the travel insurance policy.

Mr Azzopardi said his family doctor had had a meeting with the insurance company in which he assured them that the information they had was incorrect and even issued a medical report that Mr Azzopardi led a healthy lifestyle, had no medical conditions and was in good health.

Despite this, Mr Azzopardi said the firm was still refusing to honour its contractual obligations and therefore warned of further legal action if it continued with its refusal. Apart from the medical fees, Mr Azzopardi was also holding the firm responsible for damages.

Lawyer Stefano Filletti signed the official letter.
