A tear slides down Noella Agius's face as she edits a photograph of her father, Mario, by cropping him out of the picture, taken during her brother's recent wedding.

"At my father's studio I used to edit photos for our clients whose relatives died... I can't believe I'm editing a picture of my father now," she said.

His wife Anna and their three children, Thomas, 33, Edward, 29, and Noella, 21, are still trying to come to terms with what happened.

"Photography was his life, his passion and even his hobby. I'm in the real estate business and I visit houses. Sometimes I see people's wedding pictures taken by my father in their houses.... You expect someone to die of a heart attack or something like that, but not taking photos," Edward said.

Mr Agius had inherited his passion for photography from his father and grandfather and started working in the Qormi studio at the age of 15. Now the photography gene has been passed on to his daughter, Noella, who had worked part-time with her father.

"I know he wants me to continue doing photography. And I will for sure. But my fear is facing it every day. I know he wants us to keep the shop," she said, adding: "I'm sure he's in a better place now. He really believed in God...

"He's probably laughing at us and saying: 'Go to work'. He always tried to calm us down... Whatever happened, if we were OK, he was OK."

Edward remarked that their father was known to be a kind and genuine man. "His way of communicating with us was by trying to make us laugh. As long as people were smiling and laughing, he was fine," Edward added.

His sister agreed and recalled: "Once he hid underneath the stairs of the shop and was waiting for me to give me a fright. I went to get something from there and I ended up giving him a fright instead," she laughed.

Edward added: "And there was the time when he saw his reflection in the mirror and thought he saw a man in the house. He started shouting and running... I think he exaggerated things to make us laugh," he said.

Their father, who would have turned 58 on Thursday, loved spending time with his four grandchildren Julia, Beppe, Jacque and Laurent. He also exercised everyday to remain fit.

"My dad was a health freak," Edward said: "He was like the family doctor.

"He used to go to the doctor to check his blood pressure regularly. So, after a while, he bought himself one of the monitors and read the blood pressure of his brothers and sisters," Edward smiled as his sister giggled: "At Christmas, we'd all be checking our blood pressure."

Noella added: "I received e-mails from people I never met telling me our father was a great photographer. He would have taken their wedding photo 20 years ago."

"It feels really good to know he's loved and, fair enough, I lost a great person in my life but I have no regrets because I really do appreciate him. Knowing everyone else appreciates him, makes me feel much better."
