The government is planning a pilot project at Ghadira Bay which would ensure that part of the beach will be free of umbrellas and sunbeds put up for rent by the various lido operators.

Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said in parliament in reply to a parliamentary question that particular areas would be designated for the rental umbrellas and sunbeds while other parts of the bay will be completely free of such rental beach furniture.

He stressed that the lidos were not being offered concessions, but designated areas. Rather than being charged rent, they will be asked to pay a contribution for beach management.

He was replying to a question by Labour MP Gavin Gulia.
